Northern Norton Sound Fish and Game Advisory Committee Meeting

The Northern Norton Sound Fish and Game Advisory Committee will hold a public meeting in Nome at the Northwest Campus, Nagozruk Conference room on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 2:30pm.

Agenda items include the Arctic/Yukon/Kuskokwim Finfish proposals that have been submitted to the Board of Fisheries for their January 15-19, 2019 meeting in Anchorage. Of particular interest to GMU 22 are the proposals seeking to repeal the Tier II subsistence chum salmon fishery; repeal the Subdistrict I of the Norton Sound District Chum Salmon Management Plan; lengthen the commercial salmon fishing season in the Norton Sound-Port Clarence Area; remove the restriction on the length of commercial salmon fishing periods in Norton Sound Subdistrict 1; and repeal the Guideline harvest range for Port Clarence District and replace with the Port Clarence District and Pilgrim River Salmon Management Plan.

Other fish proposals seek to require bi-weekly reporting of all sport, personal use, and subsistence king salmon catch; prohibit the intentional waste or destruction of subsistence caught fish; prohibit the intentional waste or destruction of sheefish; repeal and readopt the Policy for Statewide Salmon Escapement Goals; amend the Policy for the Management of Sustainable Salmon Fisheries; modify criteria for the allocation of fishery resources among personal use, sport, and commercial fisheries.

The Advisory Committee will also review proposals that have been submitted to the Joint Boards of Fisheries and Game regarding the administration and uniform rules of operation for advisory committees. The Joint Boards will meet March 21-25, 2019 to discuss advisory committee regulations.

Advisory committees are local groups that meet to discuss fish and wildlife issues and to provide recommendations to the Alaska Board of Fisheries and the Alaska Board of Game on regulations that may affect them. All meetings are open to the public. As the local forum, committees develop regulatory proposals, evaluate regulatory proposals and provide recommendations to the appropriate board, provide a local forum for fish and wildlife conservation and use, including matters relating to habitat, advising the appropriate regional councils on resources, and consulting with individuals, organization, and agencies.

If you are person with a disability who requires special accommodations in order to participate in any of the public meetings, please contact Hazel Smith at 907-442-1717 or 907-412-3080 no later than 48 hours prior to the meeting so any necessary arrangements made be made.
