The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) proposes
to amend the current Solid Waste Disposal Permit No. SW3A092-17, to the City of
Fort Yukon, to include the operation of a centralized transfer site and baler
facility in addition to the operation of a Class III Community Municipal Solid
Waste Landfill. The current permit only applies to the Class III Municipal
Solid Waste Landfill so an amendment is required to include the proposed
transfer site and baler facility.
Applicant
Information:
Location: Fort Yukon
is located at the confluence of the Yukon and Porcupine Rivers. The legal
description of the landfill is: Section 15, Township 20 North, Range 12 East, Fairbanks
Meridian.
Landowner: City of Fort Yukon
Landfill Operator: City of Fort Yukon
Project Description:
This public notice is for modifications to permit
#SW3A092-17 made necessary by the construction of a central transfer site and
baler facility in Ft. Yukon, Alaska. The original design for this project
called for the construction of the baler facility at the new landfill. The City of Ft. Yukon is proposing to amend
the design to move the baler to a centralized transfer site in town that will
include recycling facilities and allow for a heated baler facility. This new
design will allow the City of Ft. Yukon to restrict public access at the new
landfill and will also provide increased separation of wastes and increased
recycling capacity.
The location of the new landfill is 2 miles east of Ft.
Yukon directly across from the existing sewage lagoon. The landfill will serve
the 519 residents of Ft. Yukon. It is estimated
that the community produces 473 tons of solid waste per year. The 40 acre site
will be developed in 10 acre sections. The landfill site includes a gravel pad,
a solid waste disposal cell, an enhanced burn unit, a stockpile of cover
materials, and drainage controls, within a fenced area. The baler facility will
be located in the old FAA building near the airport.
